Description: All successful runners have their own stories of hard-learned lessons and insightful experiences that have made a positive difference in the way they train and compete. But few have as many to share—or can share them as well—as Joe Henderson. In Better Runs, Henderson draws on his 25 years as one of America’s premier running writers, as well as his participation in more than 700 races, to give readers practical advice on every aspect of running. From how to choose the right shoes to how to set up an effective training program and how to improve race tactics, Henderson’s guidance will enlighten elite runners and joggers alike. Better Runs is an inspirational book in which the author reflects his own and others’ successes and failures. It’s also an instructional book that will help you prevent your own running mistakes before they occur. Each of the book’s 25 chapters serves as a valuable lesson in running, helping you run farther and faster and get more fulfillment from your runs. Better Runs is filled with amusing anecdotes and time-tested advice on how to • be a winner in running, regardless of your ability and ambition; • balance your training by rotating workout distances; • measure, record, and analyze your times and distances; • improve racing with more efficient pacing; • supplement running with other exercises; • set challenging yet reachable running goals; • establish good eating habits; • prevent injuries and treat your own ailments; and • much, much more. Whether you run competitively or just for pleasure, Better Runs will improve your performance and enrich your experience in future runs and races. The book will inspire, entertain, and inform you. You’ll want to read and refer back to it before every run. About the Author Joe Henderson has been writing about running for more than 25 years. He’s not only the West Coast editor and a featured columnist for Runner’s World magazine but also the author of more than a dozen books on running, including Long-Run Solution, Fitness Running, and Jog, Run, Race. He also promotes and participates in running events. As a veteran runner with more than 700 races to his credit, Henderson has seen firsthand how the sport has grown and evolved. Henderson received his BA from Drake University in 1965. After graduation he worked as an editor in the sports department at the Des Moines Register and later as a staff writer for Track & Field News. In 1967 he started his long employment with Runner’s World, where he eventually worked his way up to senior editor. Henderson is also an adjunct assistant professor of journalism at the University of Oregon. In addition, he writes and produces a monthly newsletter called Running Commentary. Henderson is a former executive director of the International Runners Committee, which was instrumental in placing a women’s marathon in the Olympics. His honors include being inducted into the Road Runners Club of America Hall of Fame and receiving the club’s journalism award in 1979, and being named a Drake University Distinguished Alumnus in 1981.
